And just in time for two dumpings of snow. Beautiful, but I've had enough shoveling for the winter, thanks.
Prancer is down with it, though, and so we had to postpone our Christmas with him. It was the saddest thing ~ I shoveled all morning so I could get the car out of the driveway and called over to verify we'd be picking him up shortly. He answered in a not-so-bright voice and when asked how his morning was instead of the usual re-telling of various cartoons or trouble he'd gotten into, I got a weak sounding, "Not good." So hopefully we'll be able to reschedule.
Thankfully, Mozart is fully recovered (and I didn't succumb). When he was well enough, we went over to Mme. Child's house for dinner. While the adults were in the kitchen the children played quietly. Though we didn't *think* too quietly. Alas, a bloodied Mozart came into the room after having "crashed the angels". Mme. Child's very precious Lenox angels. Two of them. And a snowman. And a Santa. They could not be salvaged, though we were able to salvage Mozart's hands with several bandages.
Next day we went to the children's party at my work. Mozart, of course, thought Santa had come to see him exclusively. He could have held court on the man's lap for hours. Before he was convinced not to take up any more time, Santa asked what happened to his hands, to which he replied, matter-of-factly, "Oh, those just my Angel Boo-Boos."
The Angel Boo-Boos have nearly healed and don't need bandages any longer, and though Mozart would clearly like to have them, he can now be distracted away from needing them.
One last tale:
This morning I had been out shoveling from the wee hours. When I cam back in I hear, "Mama! I am awake! I am in a good mood!" Very pleased by this, I go to collect him for breakfast. While getting it together, he says, "I had good dreams. So, I am in a good mood." I asked him what his dreams were about, thinking they were likely about Santa or fire trucks as these are the things he talks most about these days, but his reply: "COOKIES! Lots of them!!!"

Happy Independence Day!
I'm a little late to wish you well on this 4th of July, but I figure better late than never.
I gotta say, spirit of the holiday aside, I am feeling really, REALLY grateful to care for myself independently today. I feel somewhat human for the first time since last Saturday when I put my back out for the umpteeth time. It was on its way out for a couple weeks - the beginning of strawberry season does not do this body good. But since I love strawberries, I kept picking every chance I got and last Friday that entailed 3 hours of picking with a total of 8 quarts of strawberries. I was certainly sore afterwards, but not too sore to attempt to move a gigantic, albeit huge, bookcase that the neighbors had given us from their house to ours. And it was all good until the very last foot of the move. It tilted. Did I mention it was huge. A good foot taller than me. So I compensated for the tilt with my position and *TWINGE* <-- yep, THAT put my back out. TW had to step in to move it the rest of the mere 12 inches. I held it together until the neighbors said their goodbyes... Then I promptly went upstairs, medicated myself, and hobbled - very slowly - into bed. Where I stayed the remainder of the weekend with only 1-2 hour stretches out of bed.
As you can imagine, it was a long week for as short as it was. I cut out of work at 1:30 on Monday, managed to stay the day on Tuesday, and took a respite in the middle of the day yesterday. Each day I saw the chiropractor or a craniosacral therapist. I love them both. Truly.
Today I took it slow in the morning and we just hung around the house most of the day, but had to get to the farm to pick up our veggie share. I did not pick strawberries. (!) TW and Mozart did pick peas and hunted for a time for the remaining strawberries. I had my share of picking with the quart of basil that was allotted, and then read in the car and waited.
On arrival home I put the basil into vodka for an infusion. One of my favorite all-time drinks is The Legal Herb - a basil infused vodka martini that was served at this long ago fabulous restaurant in Minneapolis (can't remember it's name just now or I'd give it props!). What with the strawberry vodka and now this basil vodka, I imagine you are thinking we are quite the drinkers! No so, I'm afraid. I did have a sip of the strawberry spirit to taste, and it was lovely, but it has remained untouched since. I am just happy to have proper options to serve people (or us) when the mood strikes.
I also had an idea that I put into motion. It will either be brilliant as the week goes by, or I will have done the work for nothing. I'm voting for brilliant: I took out my mandolin and sliced up zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, and onion and then filled several mason jars with said ingredients. I'm hoping that this will get us to eat more of the veggies we get from our share. One of my most-loved breakfasts is sauteed veggies with eggs and this will make it easy :D And The Boy loves cucumbers, so he will always have some for snack or side-dish. I'll try to report back and let you know if this planning worked out.

Session in pain tolerance.
Day before Easter I took Mozart on an Easter Egg Hunt. Two, to be exact. The first one was at Home Depot, and I wanted to go to that one because I thought the idea of hunting for eggs down the aisles was awesome. Each kid got to find two eggs, do a variety of projects (including egg dying, of course), and then watch whatever portion of Hop! they were interested in with popcorn, water, and more crafts provided. We had a blast! But the Easter Bunny did not make an appearance. Now, I could have cared less, and if I went solely on the reaction that Mozart had to the last Easter Bunny he ran into, then I would have left it at that, but since meeting said bunny the last time (even though he was afraid of it), that's all he was talking about.
So off we went to the second egg hunt of the day. This one was more traditional in style, and the bunny was present. Mozart, however, was done with the eggs and more interested in eating the candy found within and then running over to the play area.
That is where we got into trouble. He ran directly for the swings. Unfortunately there were three rather large children going full force on the swings and he was headed for disaster. I ran up behind him, swooped down, and saved him from being barreled into (much to his dismay - as evidenced by the intense screaming that ensued).
As I'm working on calming him down, though, I felt it coming: the tell tale signs that I'd put my back out and I'd best be very, very careful if I wanted to be able to walk the next day. I gingerly put him down, still trying to calm him down, and somehow - I don't think so gracefully - managed to get him and myself into the car to get home.
We missed the bunny, but Mozart was unfazed by that.
The rest of the weekend and through the week, I moved very carefully. The worst was Monday, when I think I may have looked somewhat like a zombie in my movements - you try to walk without moving your back at all. I got into the chiropractor on Tuesday and felt much better afterwards, but still in a fair amount of pain. And he prescribed two massages.
Oooooh, lovely, you may say. Yes. Well. There is no need to be jealous. While I do feel much better since having the first massage, the actual experience is a form of torture, I'm sure. She *said* that she wasn't touching me very hard, but lemme tell ya how my voice goes all falsetto and I can't quite breathe when she gets those certain muscles that are in the habit of twitching out on me these days. I had originally scheduled the second massage for Saturday, but she advised against that - she said there would be a chance I am still sore from the massage then, or that I wouldn't have been pain-free for long enough to continue to like her. I'm now scheduled two weeks out.
Seriously, if she were mugged, I think she could have the perp on his knees and offering up his own money within seconds. Good fun. But, I do feel a bit better now that I endured that little session in pain tolerance.

Tumble, Crash, Splash.
I was doing so good yesterday. I'd made a resolution to take a walk with Mozart, whenever weather permits, when we get home each evening now that it is light later. We walked downtown at a brisk pace and while I am clearly out of practice in the fitness department, neither my feet nor my undercarriage were acting up and we got home tired but feeling energized and refreshed.
I made pasta for dinner, we ate, and then I ran upstairs to grab the wipes to clean up Mozart's pasta face. Still feeling fine, I came down the stairs and I don't know what the fudge happened, but somehow I ended up taking a fantastically dramatic tumble down those last two steps. I yelped. Mozart began crying because he didn't know what what going on and I said repeatedly, "I'm ok, I'm ok, I'm ok." The wife came rushing to ensure that I actually was ok and finding no broken bones, quickly scolded me for falling and reminded me that we can't afford to give the chiropractor any more money.
At first I thought I'd sprained both ankles and my wrist. My shoulder smarted pretty bad and my elbow was turning purple. My leg had an unfortunate and sporadic shooting pain and my back and neck just felt out of joint. After receiving kisses from Mozart on my elbow, though, I thought I'd be ok and counted my blessings.
Then I slept like utter crap. Mozart woke up an hour early. And I woke up feeling sore all over and with a headache. The same pelvic floor pain that I was plagued with for months and months after I had Mozart seemed to be back. And it was apparent that my little tumble had sent me crashing into a most unpleasant place. The wife reminded me to take something and I dosed myself with Motrin and went off to work. Before I got to my office I had - count them - FOUR coworkers remark on how exhausted/terrible/sick/cranky I looked. Thanks. When one of said coworkers pointed out that I hadn't done something that was due today (note - I was not notified that said task was due as I was in a mandatory training and not at the meeting when it was announced), tears sprang to my eyes.
I got an appointment with the forbidden chiropractor and went in. Turns out I've sprained my lower back and shoulder. My wrist and neck are not sprained but just jammed up. I have another appointment tomorrow.
On the exceedingly bright side, though, our water heater was installed after work today and so FINALLY we can bathe IN OUR OWN HOME and WITH HOT WATER. Yeah!!
